How to Read This Window Tint Comparison Chart

Quick reference guide on technical statutory terminology and federal standards regulating automotive window film.

What Does VLT% Mean?

Visible Light Transmission (VLT%) measures the percentage of visible light passing through your vehicle window film and glass combined. A lower number means darker tint (e.g. 5% "limo tint" blocks 95% of light), while a higher number means lighter tint (e.g. 70% is nearly clear).

Why Do Sedans and SUVs Have Different Rules?

Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS 205) allow Multi-Purpose Vehicles (MPVs, including SUVs, minivans, and trucks) to install darker tint behind the driver for cargo privacy and passenger comfort. Most states permit Any darkness on SUV back windows while requiring lighter limits for sedans.
